So it's becoming more & more common for employers to search social media sites for employees or potential employees. Negative involvement with these sites could cause you to lose your job or keep you from getting a job. Well apparently the scope of employers on the social media sweep has widened!
This weekend, an ESPN reporter was on CNN saying that ESPN has enforced major restrictions on its employees' Twitter usage. He basically said anything that could shed a bad light on ESPN shouldn't be tweeted. Now the New York Times story says employees are only restricted from tweeting about sports stories & the inner workings of ESPN.
I Googled the topic to read the whole story & found that along with ESPN, the NFL & the Marines were jumping on this social media crack down.
Now in these tough times, you can't afford to roll the dice with your livelihood...you gotta play this corporate game. But is it really fair to be judged by what you do in your free time?!
Having been a substitute teacher, I know how hard it is to get students to respect you. So I can only imagine how much more difficult it would be if my students found wild pics of me while searching Facebook. However, what do my crazy weekend photos have to do with how I conduct myself in the classroom?!
And I'm sure it would be an utter shock to your boss to know the well-mannered, mild- tempered person that clocks in from 9-5 uses such profane & explicit language on your profile status. But what does that have to do with your performance on the job?!
I guess if those doing business with your company saw those things it wouldn't look good on you or the company. But really, who doesn't understand blowing off some steam & letting loose on your own time.
For now, you better watch what you post!
